Arakan State cabinet trio, including chief minister, to contest election for NLD

Arakan State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu, Municipal Affairs Minister U Win Myint and Chin Ethnic Affairs Minister U Pone Bwe will contest the 2020 election for the National League for Democracy (NLD), according to a July 23 announcement from the ruling party’s Central Executive Committee.
U Nyi Pu will contest Arakan State Hluttaw Constituency No. 2 in Gwa Township, and U Win Myint will contest the State Hluttaw seat for Taungup Township’s Constituency No. 1.
At the national parliament level, NLD members will contest seven Amyotha Hluttaw constituencies and will not field candidates in five of the upper chamber’s Arakan State constituencies — Nos. 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 — the NLD announced.
For the Pyithu Hluttaw, the NLD will contest 15 of 17 constituencies in Arakan State, excluding Minbya and Mrauk-U townships, it said.
In the State Hluttaw, the party’s candidates will contest 29 out of 35 elected seats.
The 2020 general election will be held on November 8, the Union Election Commission announced this month.
