A young man was found dead near View Point Beach in the Arakan State capital Sittwe at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the Shwe Yaung Metta Foundation.
The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Ko Sithu Tun from Ngapyikyun Village in Pauktaw Township.
Ko Sithu Tun, an employee of the Naing Gyi restaurant, was found dead in a bush and showing signs of strangulation and swelling on his right cheek, said an official from the Sittwe-based charity.
“I don’t know about the murder in detail. We found a dead body when we went to the scene near Sittwe’s View Point Beach after we received a phone call about the incident. We transported the corpse to Sittwe General Hospital,” the official said.
A female relative of the restaurant owner said that Ko Sithu Tun went to Strand Road on Tuesday at around 11 p.m.
“He went to Strand Road when the restaurant closed. I attempted to stop him from going there. He is LGBT and has no enmity with anyone. Everyone is saddened by his death,” she said.
DMG was unable to contact the Sittwe Township Police regarding the man’s death. Robberies, sexual assaults and murders are a growing concern in Sittwe, where residents say violent crime is on the rise.
“We are worried about our safety and dare not go outside at night,” said a local woman in Sittwe.
A 12-year-old girl from Sittwe, who went missing on March 15 and was found the following day unconscious with severe head wounds, died on March 18 at a local hospital. And an 18-year-old resident of Sittwe’s Mingan Ward was stabbed to death at her place of employment, a consumer goods shop near the Arakan State government offices, on August 15, 2022.
