A clash broke out between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army near Abaung Thar village in Chin State’s Paletwa Township on Sunday, according to locals.
Gunfire was heard after three artillery shells were fired from a hill near Abaung Thar village at around 10 a.m., a resident of Paletwa told DMG.
“I heard three explosions and gunfire this morning. I don’t know the details of the fighting. I think the clash lasted about an hour,” the Paletwa resident added.
The clash reportedly erupted at a location between Abaung Thar village, about six miles from Paletwa, and Yoke Wa village, locals said. A clash broke out between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army at the same location on May 26 of this year.
“A clash broke out near Abaung Thar village this morning and the fighting lasted for nearly an hour. In the past, locals were forced to flee by fighting,” said another Paletwa resident.
“I don’t know if there was a clash in Paletwa today because I haven’t received any news about fighting,” said U Khaing Thukha, spokesman for the Arakan Army.
DMG was unable to obtain comment from Chin State Minister for Security and Border Affairs Colonel Han Win Aung regarding the clash.
Military tensions are currently running high between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army in Paletwa Township as well as in neighbouring Arakan State.
