Myanmar’s military regime has taken action against seven foreign employment agencies for violations of the law, according to the junta’s Ministry of Labour.
The Ministry of Labor said in a statement on October 10 that Limonia, Win Phyo Aung, JMK Service, New Three Diamond, Shwe Lwin Lwin, Star Yadanar and Aung Kaung Mon foreign employment agencies took money in advance from workers and did not ultimately send them overseas.
The licence of Limonia agency was permanently revoked, while the licences of Win Phyo Aung and JMK Services were revoked for one year and the licences of New Three Diamond, Shwe Lwin Lwin, Star Yadanar and Aung Kaung Mon agencies were revoked for six months.
“Our agency’s licence was revoked not because of financial problems. We signed a pledge three times that we would send workers abroad. The main rule is to plan to send workers within 90 days of accepting them,” said a female employee from New Three Diamond.
The seven foreign employment agencies whose licences were revoked permanently or temporarily had a history of sending Myanmar migrant workers primarily to Thailand, Japan and Malaysia.
“We were not contacted by foreign employment agencies because the junta’s Ministry of Labour takes action against overseas employment agencies that violate the law,” said U Aung Khaing, vice chairman of the Myanmar Overseas Employment Agencies Federation (MOEAF).
In July, the junta revoked the licences of the Myint Mo Phue Pwint and Lu Kyaw recruitment agencies for violations of the law.
The Ministry of Labour permanently revoked the licences of 26 foreign employment agencies and suspended those of 24 agencies during the nine years from 2014 through 2022.
