Some 20 civilians including children were injured on Sunday in bombing raids by the regime in Arakan State’s Ann Township, where the Myanmar military’s Western Command is based, according to residents.
A junta jet fighter conducted two bombing runs on Kyaungphyukwin, Ywathit, Gwegaing, and Kyintaunggyi villages in Ann Township.
“It dropped bombs around 12 p.m. and around 4 p.m. Many people were injured. But I don’t know the details,” said an Ann resident.
The injured reportedly received medical treatment at healthcare facilities in surrounding villages. DMG was still trying to confirm the number of casualties at press time.
Fighting has been raging in Ann Township as the Arakan Army (AA) has stepped up its attacks on junta positions in Ann.
The two sides clashed fiercely in three locations in Kazukaing village-tract on Sunday, said residents.
“I saw the aircraft this morning. I also heard gunfire. Locals are concerned about the dangers of air raids and artillery strikes. So, many villagers have fled their homes,” said another Ann resident.
The fighting has forced residents from more than 20 villages in Ann Township to flee their homes. The displaced people urgently need shelter, food, water and medicines.
Civilian casualties keep increasing in Arakan State as the regime has been conducting indiscriminate air attacks on residential areas.
A total of 179 civilians were killed and 486 were injured between November 13 last year and March 21, according to the Humanitarian and Development Cooperation Office of the AA.
