A Myanmar Navy vessel fired heavy weapons into Ramree town, which is held by the Arakan Army (AA), on April 13 and 14, locals said.
Mortar shells fired by a Myanmar Navy ship docked at Myochaungwa Village in Manaung Township landed and exploded in Ramree and nearby villages.
“Artillery shells fired by the junta forces fell in villages and Ramree town. The regime troops fired heavy weapons for two hours,” said a local man in Ramree.
Locals said that shells fired by the regime landed in some villages, causing damage to some houses and killing two residents, but DMG has not been able to independently confirm those reports.
Locals from villages in Ramree fled to safer locations due to the fear of additional heavy weapons fire.
“Locals were forced to flee to safer locations by the regime shelling. Some mortar shells fired by the regime forces landed in the villages,” said a resident of Hinkharaw Village in Ramree Township.
A junta airstrike on Phetkyat Village in Ramree Township killed one child and injured two others on March 30.
The AA seized Ramree, an island town, on March 11.
The AA has seized large swaths of Rathedaung, Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Minbya, Pauktaw, Myebon and Ramree townships, as well as Paletwa Township in neighbouring Chin State. The regime has been carrying out several airstrikes on towns held by the AA.
