At least 10 junta soldiers were killed when a Myanmar military drone attack reportedly targeted its own troops in error during hostilities near Thandwe Airport in Thandwe Town, Arakan State, on Thursday.
A drone unit of the military’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 55 fired by mistake during fierce fighting near the Thandwe Airport on June 13, a source said.
“At least 10 junta soldiers were killed and some were injured by such an accidental drone strike by the military,” the source added.
Military observers say the regime has mainly used air and drone attacks in recent clashes with the Arakkha Army (AA).
Fighting between the military and AA was intense near Thandwe Airport on Friday morning. Residents of Thandwe are having difficulties fleeing to safer locations due to junta blockades of roads.
“The AA attacked some military outposts near the Thandwe Airport. Fighting broke out in urban Thandwe and there is no more fighting in rural areas. We are worried about the safety of those trapped by the fighting,” said a displaced person in Thandwe.
Thandwe Town is home to the military’s LIB Nos. 566 and 55, and Artillery Regiment Nos. 375 and 346.
At least 37 junta soldiers were killed and seven others were injured in an artillery shell explosion at a junta hilltop outpost on Badaung Hill near Thandwe Town on May 6.
