A teenage boy was injured on Wednesday morning after an artillery shell fired by the Myanmar military fell and exploded on Ngapali Beach in Arakan State’s Thandwe Township, where fighting between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) is intensifying, according to locals.
Maung Pyone Cho, 17, of Linthar Ward in Ngapali Town, was hit by shrapnel while he was fishing near the shore at around 7 a.m. on July 10.
“He sustained shrapnel [wounds] while fishing and his condition is considered not life-threatening,” said a local resident.
Those residents who remain in the town do so due to a combination of financial difficulties and travel restrictions, though the majority of Thandwe residents have fled.
“People in Ngapali Town rely on the sea for their livelihoods. The locals used to go down to the sea and fish every day, but now they can’t do that anymore due to the ongoing fighting. Fishermen will go hungry if they are unable to go to the sea and are afraid of artillery strikes, landmines and bombs,” said another Ngapali resident.
Civilian casualties have surpassed 130 due to the regime’s airstrikes and artillery attacks in Thandwe Township.
The AA seized the military’s Thandwe-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 566 on June 27 and took control of Thandwe Airport on July 5. The AA is currently attacking the military’s Thandwe-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 55.
