The U-18 inter-district men’s football tournament will kick off at Danyawadi football stadium in Sittwe on May 10, according to the state’s Sports and Physical Education Department (SPED).
A total of five teams representing Sittwe, Mrauk-U, Maungdaw, Kyaukphyu and Thandwe districts will take part in the football contest. The matches are designed to be played round-robin, and the two teams with the most points will play in the final.
The participating teams have already arrived in Sittwe and are undergoing training for the tournament.
“Preparations for the football competition are different from previous years. We have also selected inexperienced new players for the tournament. We have a few difficulties in training them [the new footballers]. We tried our best and trained them,” said Ko Khaing Kyaw Tun, an assistant coach for the football team representing Maungdaw District.
The best players at this competition will be chosen to represent Arakan State at the 2023 Inter-State/Region U-18 Men's Football Tournament to be held in Naypyidaw, said Daw Khin May Htay, deputy director of the state SPED.
“The 2023 Inter-State/Region U-18 Men’s Football Tournament will be held in Naypyidaw, so the tournament is being held with the aim of achieving success for the football team representing Arakan State in that tournament, and for the emergence of young players in Arakan State,” she added.
“Through this tournament, the players will be preliminarily selected and then trained in the camp,” she said. The U-18 inter-district women’s football tournament is scheduled to be held in June.
Young and talented footballers from the townships were selected to represent their respective districts to participate in this competition.
“Having these kinds of competitions is really good for young people like us who are passionate about football. I will be happy if I am selected to represent Arakan State for the football event to be held in Naypyidaw,” said Phyo Lwin Oo, a young player from the Maungdaw District team.
Thandwe District won the trophy at the 2022 U-19 men’s football tournament.
