The junta-appointed Union Election Commission (UEC) has so far approved the registrations of five political parties for the election being planned by Myanmar’s military regime.

The junta’s election body has approved the applications of the military proxy Union Solidarity and Development Party, Myanmar People’s Democratic Party, National Unity Party, Phalon-Sawaw Democratic Party and New Democracy Party (Kachin), allowing them to register as political parties.

The new Political Parties Registration Law promulgated by the regime in late January requires political parties to re-register with the junta’s UEC or face dissolution.

The election body is still scrutinising the documents of parties from Arakan State that have applied for registration under the new law, said U Thurein Htut of the Arakan State election subcommission.

Among the political parties based in Arakan State that have registered with the junta’s UEC are the Arakan National Party, Arakan Front Party, Khami National Development Party, Mro Ethnic Party, Mro National Development Party and Rakhine State National Unity Party.

Junta spokesman Major-General Zaw Min Tun told the press on March 27 that the regime still could not fix a date for its election because of security conditions in Myanmar.

The Myanmar people reportedly have little interest in the junta-proposed poll and many oppose the planned election, saying it will be neither free nor fair.
