The Arakan State parliament chiefs have urged the UN special envoy to Myanmar Ms. Christine Schraner Burgener on 11 July to address the government to build shelters for IDPs in Arakan State for the rainy season.

Because of the Tatmadaw’s interrogations in villages during the fighting in northern Arakan State, the resignations of village administrators have increased because of safety issues.

Following the incessant rainfall, the Sin Baw Kaing refugee camp located at the bank of the Lay Myo River has been submerged which affects IDPs living in over 400 tents in the camp. They urgently need to be evacuated to alternative locations.

The Indian government is going to provide USD 25 million within five years for resettlement of returnees and socio-economic development in Arakan State, Indian ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Shri Saurabh Kumar said.

“Water seeps into the villages, and the water level is now three to six feet high. Since we are cut off from Internet access, we could not post about the flooding in our villages on social media,” said administrator of Ohe Pyin Taung village.

Ko Tin Hlaing Oo and Ma May Gyi were arrested near Nay Pyi Taw, administration capital of Myanmar, according to one of the detained people. 

Previously, various natural disasters hit in Arakan State and they devastated people’s lives and property. In order to reduce the potential risks of disasters, the meeting was held under the instruction of the proper ministries,

It has now been twenty days since the Internet has been cut off in eight townships of Arakan State. It’s not known if the government has any intention to lift the ban.  

Since ongoing armed conflicts between the Tatmadaw and the AA continue in Arakan State, political parties and other organizations are concerned if the 2020 election can be held in the region.

About 700 IDPs from Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U Townships are facing health problems as a result of ongoing fighting between the Tatmadaw and the AA in Arakan State, the Rakhine Ethnics Congress released a statement on 9 July.

In order to advance the investigations about violence that broke out in Arakan State’s Maungdaw district, an investigation tribunal met and discussed the issues with a legal advisory team, the Tatmadaw announced.

More than 30 people from Kan Pyin village in Buthidaung Township have been sequestered in a monastery by a military troop. The villagers have been ordered not to go outside the monastery for nine days, so their food supply has run out.

The water level of Lay Myo river located east of Mrauk-U town in Arakan State has risen above its critical level and will continue to rise by about three feet in the next two days, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced on 10 July.

The Indian government yesterday handed over 250 houses built for Hindu, Muslim and Arakanese people in Maungdaw Township whose houses were burnt during violence in 2017.

However, members of the AA-S have questioned whether the surprise arrest was carried out with the United League of Arakan (ULA) and the Arakan Army’s (AA) knowledge of the arrests.

The sinking of three boats in Arakan State in the first week of July, leaving several people dead and missing, has prompted renewed calls for improved water transport safety. 

Traders encounter difficulty showing samples of their goods to export to the neighboring country and to place orders for goods from Bangladesh to import to Myanmar, a trader from Maungdaw said.

The compilation of a draft proposal to list the ancient city Mrauk-U in Arakan State as a world cultural heritage zone is 70 percent completed now, according to the Department of Archaeology in Mrauk-U Township.

People with disabilities in Arakan State have not appreciated their rights completely, said U Hla Myint, chairperson of the Arakan State Association for Persons with Disabilities.
