At least 10 people were injured and one person was killed in a traffic accident on Wednesday evening between Thayet Cho and Aung Phyu Pyin villages in Ponnagyun Township, Arakan State, according to people who are assisting those injured.
One of the victims, who did not want to reveal his name, said the accident occured at a bend along the road connecting the two villages.
“Our vehicle left from Mrauk-U. At a turn, a vehicle that might have come from Sittwe appeared in front of us. We couldn’t see it from a distance because of the turn,” he said.
The head-on collision injured both passengers and drivers, and left the fronts of the vehicles mangled wrecks.
Ko Maung Maung Than, an in-charge of drivers from the Ponnagyun Development Youth Organisation, which is providing help to the victims and transported some to the Arakan State capital for medical treatment, said: “I am not aware of the accident in detail. There were seven people in our car. They were sent to Sittwe. Another two were going to Sittwe by bus.”
“One died on the spot and the body was sent to Yoe Ta Yote village by a funeral service vehicle.”
The identity of the fatality was not immediately known.
