Two Muslims were injured in a junta artillery strike on Gone Nar Village, Shwe Zarr Village- tract, in Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, on Thursday night.

A man and a woman were injured when a shell fired by Border Guard Police Battalion No. 5 in Myo Thu Gyi Ward, at the entrance of Maungdaw Town, hit the village at around 10 p.m. on May 9.

“The battalion fired several shells, and one of them landed on that Muslim village. I heard one of them was seriously injured,” said a Maungdaw resident.

Border Guard Police Battalion Nos. 2 and 5 shelled nearby villages on Thursday, said the Maungdaw resident.

The AA has carried out a series of attacks on Border Guard Police Battalion No. 2, also known as the 4th Mile Battalion. It is also attacking other junta positions in Maungdaw Township and beyond.

“The fighting was fierce at the 4th Mile Battalion on Thursday. The regime fired shells at residential areas. The fighting was also fierce at some [other regime] outposts in Maungdaw Township,” a source told DMG.

Locals and military analysts said the 4th Mile Battalion is one of two battalions guarding the town.

“Border Guard Police Battalion No. 5 is located in Myo Thu Gyi Ward. If the AA can seize the 4th Mile Battalion, it can attack Battalion No. 5 at the entrance of the town. It can then enter the town,” said one military analyst.

The AA has seized several junta positions in Maungdaw Township including Border Guard Police Battalion Nos. 1, 7 and 10.

To defend against the AA onslaught, the regime has brought in reinforcements via the Kanyin Chaung Jetty at the border trade camp.
