Fierce fighting between the military and Arakan Army (AA) has been ongoing in Pauktaw, Arakan State, since Tuesday afternoon, according to locals.
The clash followed after the AA occupied Pauktaw’s Myoma police station on November 16. The fighting resumed on November 21, a source in Pauktaw told DMG.
“The fighting was reported in downtown Pauktaw and gunfire was heard. The Myanmar Navy opened heavy weapons and small arms fire. We dare not go outside,” said a source trapped by the fighting.
About 500 local residents have been trapped in Pauktaw since the fighting began, and more than 100 residents have reportedly been detained by the junta.
“Locals trapped by the fighting are concerned for their safety. They’ve run out of rice. I want relief groups to help the trapped people,” said another Pauktaw resident trapped by the fighting.
DMG continues to attempt to contact junta spokesman Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun and U Khaing Thukha, spokesman for the ULA/AA, regarding the matter.
