Continuous rainfall over the past several days has caused flooding and water overflow in parts of Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Minbya and Maungdaw townships in Arakan State.
Heavy rain has fallen since July 4, leaving low-lying areas and villages with poor drainage inundated.
“Some houses in the low-lying part of our village are already under water. The entire village is not flooded yet, but if the rain continues like this, the situation will certainly become worse. Tharee Creek is narrow, so water drains slowly. Flooding happens here every year,” a resident of Kyauktaw Township told DMG.
Villages affected by flooding in Kyauktaw Township include Kyauktalone, Thayettapin, Ywamapyin and Leikma.
Flooding has also been reported in villages along the Panmyaunggyi Creek area of Minbya Township.
“We have learned that villages including Ohpyintaung, Phweya Kanseik and Ngatar are experiencing flooding. However, we have not yet been able to confirm the full extent of the damage because communication with those areas is limited,” a Minbya resident said.
Some houses in Maungdaw town have also been inundated, according to local residents.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has warned that a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal could bring heavy rain, flooding and landslides to Arakan State.
