Students who have passed Grade 10 but failed the Grade 11 or matriculation exam under the old curriculum are eligible to sit the matriculation exam or Grade 12 exam under the new curriculum to be held next year, the Myanmar Examinations Department announced on Wednesday.
Those in education circles said there are challenges for the students to take the matriculation exam under the new curriculum.
U Win Kyaw Lin, principal of the Ni La Kywel private school in Sittwe, said: “All the lessons are almost completely new in Grade 12. It will be a new challenge for the children. Children should consider carefully before they attend.”
Parents should also assess the capacity of their children, he added.
Teachers in storm-hit northern Arakan State did not receive capacity-building training to teach Grade 9 and Grade 12 due to Cyclone Mocha, and thus had difficulties in teaching. Parents also have difficulties sending their children to school as the cyclone inflicted significant property damage, with accompanying financial strain.
“Of course we want our children to become educated people,” said U Win Hlaing from Meeyekpyin Village in Kyauktaw Township. “However, we have financial difficulties now to send my daughter to school. My daughter wants to continue schooling.”
The cost for schooling is high in Arakan State, and many rural people can’t afford to send their children to school in the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha, he added.
A total of 16,928 students in Arakan State sat for the matriculation exam in the fiscal year 2022-23, and a total of 9,964 passed the exam.
