A Muslim cleric in Thazigon Village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, was shot and critically injured by two unknown gunmen at around 3 p.m. on Thursday.
The unidentified men shot at Muhamad Mawsuwee, a Muslim cleric in his 40s, near a bridge while he was returning to Thazigon Village from Maungdaw town.
“His injury was very serious. Two bullets went through his chest and exited his back. I don’t know if he will live or die,” said a family member.
Local residents have accused the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and Rohingya Solidarity Organisation of assassinating Muhamad Mawsuwee.
“He is a Muslim cleric and wealthy man. He may have been assassinated because of his problems with armed groups. I think ARSA is behind the attack,” said a local resident.
On August 12, 2023, two Muslim villagers were abducted by ARSA troops while driving to Kyein Chaung Village. The ARSA members also set fire to their vehicle, residents said.
ARSA is active in Rathedaung and Buthidaung townships, and in the Mayu Mountains of the larger Maungdaw District, including along the border with Bangladesh. Clashes between ARSA and AA, and the military have been reported in the past.
The Arakan Army (AA) clashed with the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) at Ahtet Pyuema Village in northern Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, on December 27.
