Myanmar’s military regime and Brotherhood Alliance have agreed to a temporary ceasefire after more than two months of intense fighting in northern Shan State.
Brokered by China, representatives of the Arakan Army (AA), Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) collectively known as the Brotherhood Alliance held talks with their junta counterparts on Wednesday and Thursday.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Nyo Twan Awng. The ceasefire was agreed on Thursday, according to sources close to the Brotherhood Alliance.
The alliance agreed not to seize any more junta outposts or towns in northern Shan State, while the junta agreed to refrain from conducting airstrikes and shelling in the area.
The results of the talks are expected to have no effect on Arakan State.
One Arakan State resident said: “The Brotherhood Alliance has agreed to a temporary ceasefire because of pressures from China. However, the ceasefire does not cover Arakan State, and fighting will escalate here. There are clashes daily in Arakan State. The AA aims to achieve changes in 2025. So, I don’t think it will stop fighting at this time.”
The AA has been conducting daily attacks in Arakan State and neighbouring Chin State’s Paletwa Township. It has seized around 160 junta positions since fresh fighting broke out in November. The AA is currently attacking battalions in Minbya, Kyauktaw and Paletwa townships.
The Brotherhood Alliance has seized several towns in northern Shan State including Chin Shwe Haw, Kunlong, Monekoe, Kyukok (Pansai), Laukkai, Namkham, Namhsan, Monglong and Kutkai.
