A truck overturned near Taung Sauk village in Ann Township, Arakan State, on Friday morning, killing two men on board.
The truck left from Minbu and was headed to the Arakan State capital Sittwe when it overturned, said Ko Zaw Win Tun, chair of the Swan Parahita Youths’ Association.
“When a vehicle overtook the truck, the [truck] driver tried to overtake it. But it overturned because of overspeed. The accident happened at a U-turn,” Ko Zaw Win Tun said.
Traffic along the Minbu-Ann road was disrupted for more than three hours because goods from the truck were strewn across the road.
“Roads on the Rakhine Yoma mountain range are more dangerous than other mountain roads. There are a lot of turns. Drivers should not neglect driving,” said a resident of Ann Township.
The location where the truck overturned is a dangerous spot, the resident said, adding that an oil tanker plunged off the road three years ago and a truck carrying gas pipelines overturned there a decade ago.
The condition of the Minbu-Sittwe road is poor, and it is often subject to landslides in the rainy season. Overturned vehicles and auto collisions are frequent occurrences, with negligent driving being a commonly cited reason.
