The matriculation examination for the 2022-23 academic year began on Wednesday across Myanmar, with a total of 19,290 students registering for the exam in Arakan State and 2,362 failing to show up on the first day of the exam, according to the state education department.
Broken down by gender, 1,229 male students and 1,133 female students failed to show up, head of Arakan State education department U Ba Htwee Sein told DMG.
“Some students might have registered with two exam centres. So they might have sat for the exam at only one of the centres. Previously, the Department of Myanmar Examination barred students from registering with more than one exam centre. However, the department has allowed it this year for the sake of the students,” he said.
Broken down geographically, 449 students failed to show up in Mrauk-U District, 777 in Sittwe District, 294 in Kyaukphyu District, 130 in Ann District, 139 in Thandwe District, 232 in Taungup District and 341 in Maungdaw District.
A total of 16,928 students, or 87.76 percent of registered students, sat the matriculation exam held according to the old curriculum on the first day. Among them were 9,421 female students and 7,507 male students.
The department is running 60 exam centres in towns across Arakan State. Students who fail the exam will have to study a new curriculum to take next year’s exam.
A total of 41,757 students sat the matriculation exam in Arakan State in the 2021-22 academic year, and 19,729 students passed the exam, according to the state education department.
