Six undocumented Chinese nationals were arrested at a junta security checkpoint near the Thanlwin Bridge in Mawlamyine, Mon State, on Monday, according to sources close to the state’s police force.
A source close to the Mon State police confirmed that six Chinese citizens — four men and two women — and a Myanmar driver were detained at a junta security checkpoint near the Thanlwin Bridge on May 8.
“The news about the arrest of six Chinese nationals is true. Six Chinese nationals without legal documents and a Myanmar driver were arrested at a security checkpoint and they are being held at the Daing Wun Kwin police station in Mawlamyine,” the source added.
The source continued that the Chinese nationals had entered Mawlamyine from Myawaddy, a border town in Kayin (Karen) State, and attempted to go to Mottama town.
The six Chinese nationals have been charged under the Immigration Act for entering Myanmar without documents, and the Myanmar driver has been sued under the Immigration Act for transporting the foreigners illegally.
“Both Chinese nationals and the driver were charged under the Immigration Act at Daing Wun Kwin police station,” said a source close to the Mawlamyine immigration office.
At least 30 Chinese citizens who entered Mon State illegally were arrested from November 2022 to May 2023, and were prosecuted under the Immigration Act and deported.
