The military clashed with the Arakha Army (AA) at a location between Kwaychaung and Yaysin villages in Thandwe Township, Arakan State, at about 5 a.m. on Saturday, according to locals.
“I confirm that there was a clash between the military and AA at a location between two villages in Thandwe Township this morning. I heard the sounds of heavy weapons and small arms fire. The junta naval vessels fired mortar shells into the scene of the fighting,” said a local resident in Thandwe.
At least 100 junta soldiers have been stationed near the scene of the fighting since February. The AA may have clashed with the military column, locals said.
The scene where the fighting erupted is about eight miles from Thandwe town and is located near the Thandwe-Taungup road. Junta soldiers provide security along the road, locals said.
“This road is used by local people from both Taungup and Thandwe. The military now tightens security along the road and bans people from travelling,” said a local resident in Thandwe.
The AA has yet to launch offensive attacks in junta battalions in Thandwe Township, but locals are worried about their safety due to the junta’s airstrikes and artillery attacks.
Myanmar Navy ships fired mortar shells into Ngankyun, Kyaukseik, Taungnyo and nearby villages in Thandwe Township on April 9. The regime carried out airstrikes on three villages in Thandwe Township last month without any fighting in the area.
