The Wunbaik reserve mangrove forest (WRMF) is Asia’s second-largest mangrove forest, but timber smugglers have been known to harvest its mangroves for use ultimately as charcoal.

Three civilians including a child were killed and three others were injured in a junta aerial attack on Pauktu Village, part of Arakan State's Thandwe Township, on Sunday.

Over a three-day period from September 18-20, the deaths of two girls ages 5 and 3, and two 2-year-olds are being blamed on diarrhoea.

The regime conducts overnight guest checks and fires mortar shells on a daily basis after setting up more security checkpoints in Sittwe, locals said.

“The road has split in the middle, so vehicles can’t pass, but motorbikes can use it. If it rains more, the road may become more damaged,” said a resident from nearby Kyauksauk Village.

“We have no more homes and are facing food challenges as the recent flood destroyed our homes. We evacuated to safer locations in advance,” said a resident of Minbya Township.

The evictees are currently staying in Sittwe's Kontan, Mizan and Shwe Pyar wards, with some taking shelter at the monasteries there.

Residents have accused the military of planting landmines near about 20 villages in Kyaukphyu Township.

Min Aung Hlaing, who is also Myanmar's self-appointed acting president and prime minister, made the remarks during a meeting on natural disaster management held in Naypyidaw on September 17.

The civilian casualties were reported after junta soldiers stationed at the Kalarpyin police station fired mortar shells into Sandar Village on September 15, hitting the school.
