The Arakan Army (AA) launched an offensive on a Border Guard Force (BGF) outpost near Kahteela Village, part of Arakan State’s Buthidaung Township, at about 8 a.m. on Saturday, according to local people.
Fighting between the Myanmar military and the AA is intensifying after the ethnic armed group launched an offensive on the BGF outpost and the military retaliated with heavy weapons and small arms fire, locals said.
“Fighting has been ongoing since 8 a.m. on November 18, with the military opening heavy weapons and small arms fire,” said a resident of Kahteela Village.
About 1,000 residents from Kahteela Village have fled to nearby villages in fear since November 16, ahead of the AA’s offensive on the BGF outpost.
“Residents have fled to safer locations for fear of junta shelling and airstrikes into the village when clashes erupt,” a local woman said.
The AA attacked the Donenyo BGF outpost in Maungdaw Township at about 10 a.m. on November 16 and occupied the BGF outpost at around 1 p.m. on November 17, the ethnic armed group said in a statement.
The AA captured 18 junta soldiers and police personnel alive, as well as seizing 40 assault rifles and other military equipment, the statement said.
The AA has attacked and occupied BGF outposts, police stations and military camps following the resumption of hostilities between the military and the ethnic armed group in Arakan State on November 13.
