A local woman was reportedly killed and one other was injured after an artillery shell fired by the Myanmar Navy landed and exploded in Ywathayar Village, part of Arakan State’s Ramree Township, at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Daw Aye Than Myint, in her 40s, and the injured is Daw Hlaing Hlaing Kyu, in her 30s, from Ponnyawady Village.
“The junta artillery strike killed a local woman and wounded another woman this morning. Villagers are still hiding and dare not go outside. It is not yet possible to say what areas have been damaged by the junta shelling,” said a local man.
A Myanmar Navy vessel docked at a location between Ramree and Manaung fired at least eight mortar shells into some villages in the Konbaung area of Ramree Township on Wednesday morning, locals said.
Civilian casualties have been on the rise due to junta shellings and airstrikes on villages and towns across much of Arakan State including Ramree, which the Arakan Army (AA) taken control of.
“The AA has already driven junta soldiers out of Ramree and there is no fighting on the ground. The regime cannot accept defeat and is using the navy and air force to inflict death and injury on the people,” said a local resident in Ramree.
Civilian casualties inflicted by the Myanmar regime’s air and artillery strikes continue to rise in Arakan State as the regime has been targeting residential areas in apparent retaliation for its recent string of military defeats.
A junta artillery strike killed a 10-year-old boy in Kyaungphyukwin Village, Ann Township, and injured a 16-year-old teenage boy in Taungnyo Village, Thandwe Township, on April 9.
A total of 179 civilians were killed and 486 were injured between November 13 last year and March 21, according to the AA’s Humanitarian and Development Cooperation Office.
