Heavy fighting has intensified around a strategic naval installation in western Myanmar’s Arakan State, with junta forces launching daily aerial bombardments and drone strikes on nearby civilian areas amid an ongoing siege, local security sources said Tuesday.

The Arakan Army has encircled the Taung Maw Gyi naval station, located about 30 miles from Kyaukphyu town, in an offensive that has reportedly trapped junta troops inside the base.

Field assessments suggest that isolated junta units inside the besieged facility have suffered heavy damage and casualties.

In response, the junta has carried out daily airstrikes using fighter jets and drones against Sanae Town and surrounding rural areas outside the main frontline.

"Arakan Army forces have fully encircled the Taung Maw Gyi naval station and inflicted serious damage on the garrison," a regional security analyst said. "Junta forces are responding with daily airstrikes and drone attacks targeting nearby civilian areas."

Daily drone strikes have also been reported in frontline villages near the naval station, including Hteindway, Awataung, Hinkhayawpyon, and Dwaycha.

The escalation follows a June 27 battlefield update by the Arakan Army confirming ongoing clashes across multiple areas in Kyaukphyu Township.

During an attack on the evening of June 27, junta forces used loitering munitions and suicide drones to strike residential wards in Sanae Town, destroying at least five houses in Kanpyinsu and Taungoosu wards.

"Evacuations helped avoid civilian casualties, but housing damage is extensive," a Kyaukphyu resident said. "The destruction is concentrated in civilian areas with no active ground fighting."

Observers say Kyaukphyu remains a key strategic area due to its role in Chinese backed infrastructure and energy projects worth billions of dollars.

The junta has deployed combined army, navy, and air force units in the area as it attempts to maintain control and push back Arakan Army advances.

Local leaders condemned the junta airstrikes, saying they are increasingly affecting civilian populations.

The Arakan Army has urged residents across Arakan State to follow air raid safety precautions due to continued aerial threats.
