An ethnic Mro man from Tarein village in Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township was severely injured in a landmine blast on Tuesday morning.
The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Ko Sein Kyet. He was seriously injured after stepping on the landmine about one mile from Tarein village while going to his farm to collect vegetables, according to a Buddhist monk.
“He was severely injured in the landmine explosion and lost consciousness. He used to go this route in the past,” the monk told DMG.
Ko Sein Kyet has reportedly been admitted to Maungdaw Hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
Residents from Tarein village are concerned for their safety following the landmine encounter near the village.
“Residents from Khamaung Seik and Myawaddy villages have fled to Maungdaw [town] amid the ongoing fighting. So we are worried about our safety,” the Buddhist monk said.
A woman from Abaungtha village in Chin State’s Paletwa Township, where fighting between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army has flared in recent days, was killed in a landmine blast on August 24.
A sense of growing unease is being felt across much of Arakan State, and neighbouring Chin State, as the two armies have engaged in repeated hostilities over recent weeks in multiple townships.
As of August 30, seven people had been killed and 22 others injured in encounters with landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERWs) in Arakan State so far this year, according to the Rakhine Ethnics Congress.
