Junta massacres kill 1,446 over past two years: research group
The regime has been increasingly and deliberately targeting civilian populations as it is losing ground in the civil war that followed its February 2021 coup.

The military regime committed 154 massacres in the two years from May 1, 2022, to May 15, 2024, killing 1,446 people, many of whom are civilians, according to the records of Burma News International (BNI)-Myanmar Peace Monitor.
The regime committed 48 massacres in Sagaing Region, 16 in Arakan State, 14 in Mandalay Region, and five and more massacres in Kachin, northern Shan State, Karenni (Kayah), Magwe, Bago, Chin, southern Shan State and Tanintharyi, according to BNI.
Of the total 154 massacres, the regime arrested and slaughtered civilians during raids in 76 cases. Forty-two massacres were categorised as bombing raids and 17 as artillery strikes. There were 15 massacres during the fighting, and prisoners of war were killed on two occasions.
Of 1,446 victims, 615 were slaughtered in junta raids, 568 were killed in aerial bombings, 112 were killed by artillery strikes, and 130 were killed in clashes, according to BNI.
There were 49 massacres involving five victims and above from January 1 to May 15 of this year. Bombing raid was responsible for most of the massacres.
