Internet blackout hampers handling of COVID-19 in Arakan State

The internet blackout affecting a large swath of Arakan State and part of neighbouring Chin State is causing delays in procedural aspects of the region’s COVID-19 response, according to Dr. Saw Min Thein, superintendent of Buthidaung Township Hospital.

Two Kyaukphyu youths face lawsuit for protesting internet ban

Two activists from Kyaukphyu town, Arakan State, are facing charges under Section 19 of Myanmar’s Peaceful Assembly Law after uploading photos on social media in which they are pictured wearing matching T-shirts that read, “Oppose internet oppression”. 

Tatmadaw advises evacuation ahead of clearance operations in Rathedaung Twsp

A letter signed by the Arakan State minister for Security and Border Affairs has urged residents of Kyauktan village and its surrounding environs in Rathedaung Township to temporarily leave their homes as the Tatmadaw will launch what it described as “clearance operations” against the Arakan Army. 

Ramree activist fined over protest against internet blackout

A court in Ramree Township has sentenced a leading member of a local youth network to 15 days in prison or a K20,000 (US$13.80) fine after he organised a protest against a one-year-old internet ban affecting several Arakan State townships.

COVID-19 worries in Sittwe as Arakan State case count ticks up

A man who returned from Bangladesh via a border trade ship was confirmed positive for COVID-19 this week in the Arakan State capital Sittwe and has been quarantined, the Ministry of Health and Sports said on June 23.
