As the Arakkha Army (AA) offensive moves closer to Gwa Town, the regime is heavily reinforcing its weapons, manpower, and supplies in the southern Arakan State town.
The regime added two more artillery units in Gwa in the last week of November. The regime deployed the artillery units in Myoma Ward and at the Baydar security checkpoint on the Gwa-Ngathainggyaung road, according to military sources.
Due to the AA offensive, the regime has been preparing a defence in Gwa by reinforcing its positions with junta soldiers from military battalions in Ayeyarwady Region in recent days.
“The regime is sending reinforcements to Gwa in an attempt to prevent town two from being seized by the AA. The regime sends soldiers from Ayeyarwady Region to Gwa Town in military trucks two or three times a week,” said a source on the ground.
The battle for control of Gwa has reached Yahai Kudoh Village, about one mile from the town.
The number of civilians displaced by the fighting is increasing, and there is an urgent need for food, shelter, clothing, and medicine for the internally displaced people (IDPs).
“As the theatre of conflict expands, IDPs face more hardships. It gets colder in winter. There are many people without warm clothes,” said an IDP in Gwa Township.
Gwa Township is closely linked to Ayeyarwady Region and holds strategic importance as AA control of the township would allow the ethnic armed group to pose a threat to the military’s hold over the delta region.
