A boat carrying food items was fired upon in the Kaladan River in Arakan State’s Kyauktaw Township at around 10 a.m. on November 17, killing one man and injuring two others.
The boat encountered the attack at a location near Piwa Village while heading to the Myanmar military’s No. 9 Military Operations Command headquarters in Kyauktaw, said a local resident who did not want to be named for security reasons.
“The boat laden with food supplies was shot at a location between a sugar mill and Piwa Village. A man was killed on the boat and two others managed to escape from the boat and fled to Piwa Village,” the unnamed resident added.
The deceased is a resident of Done Village in Kyauktaw Township, while the two injured could not be identified yet, a local said.
“The boat was fired upon, but I don’t know the people on the boat. The deceased is reportedly a resident of Done Village. Family members of the deceased were informed about the incident,” the local added.
The location where the boat was shot at is only half a mile away from the No. 9 Military Operations Command headquarters, and the military subsequently conducted drone attacks on the surrounding area, according to local residents.
Arakan State Minister for Security and Border Affairs Colonel Kyaw Thura and regime spokesperson Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun could not be reached for comment on the matter.
DMG also contacted Arakan Army (AA) spokesperson U Khaing Thukha, but had yet to receive a reply as of press time.
