One civilian was killed and four others were injured after the regime shelled Padetha Village, part of Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township, at around 11 p.m. on December 17.
U Maung Yin Thar, a 58-year-old man from Sittwe who is currently taking refuge in Padetha Village, was killed on the spot after a mortar shell fired by a junta battalion in Sittwe fell and exploded in the village on Tuesday night.
Daw Ma Thein Nu, 58, Daw Thein Nu, 43, and Ma Bu Ma Chay, 25, from Padetha Village and a woman from Kyauktaw sustained shrapnel wounds to their bodies in the artillery attack.
“A Sittwe-based junta battalion indiscriminately fired mortar shells into the village at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday without any fighting in the area, killing one man and wounding four women,” said a local man in Ponnagyun.
The Arakkha Army (AA) seized control of Ponnagyun Town on March 4 and the regime has been carrying out aerial bombardments and artillery assaults on the town and nearby villages since then.
A local resident was killed and four others were injured after an artillery shell fired by junta forces in Sittwe hit Kywehtoe Village, Ponnagyun Township, on July 23.
“The junta battalions often fire mortar shells into villages in Ponnagyun Township. The regime fires artillery at unexpected times, when people are sleeping, so we are always on alert. Yesterday, I couldn’t sleep well all night. I always worry about when the regime will fire mortar shells again,” said a local woman in Ponnagyun.
Across much of Arakan State, civilians are killed or injured due to regime artillery attacks and airstrikes on areas held by the AA.
At least 30 civilian casualties were reported in Arakan State due to junta air raids and shellings from December 1-18, according to a DMG tally.
