There were 5,148 clashes between Myanmar's military regime and resistance forces over the first eight months of 2024, local research group Nyan Lin Thit Analytica said in a report on Wednesday.

Sagaing Region saw 770 clashes from January through August, followed by Arakan State and northern Shan State with 554 and 501 clashes respectively, according to the report. Hundreds of clashes were reported in other regions and states during the period, the report added.

One military analyst said total defeat of the regime will remain a daunting task, and that fighting will continue to be intense across Myanmar.

"It is still not easy for the resistance forces to completely overthrow the military regime. Myanmar's civil war will continue to be intense. For one thing, if the military leaves politics completely, the civil war can end," the military analyst added.

Nyan Lin Thit Analytica said 7,281 junta soldiers were killed and 3,801 others were injured in those clashes, adding that the resistance side suffered 583 fatalities and 441 injured.

A total of 2,035 civilians were killed and 2,579 others were injured in junta airstrikes, artillery attacks and raids during that period, according to the report. Civilian casualties were highest in Arakan and northern Shan states, and Sagaing Region.

Resistance forces seized a total of 581 junta positions including one regional operations command, as well as other military operations commands, tactical commands, battalions, and police stations, and 46 towns, the report added.

"It is encouraging that the people are resisting the military regime. Especially after the second round of 'Operation 1027', the military dictatorship may be completely overthrown due to the mass revolution," said a youth activist in Arakan State.

Anti-regime forces have seized at least 75 towns since launching Operation 1027 in late October, according to the report.

Clashes between the military and anti-regime forces are being reported across Myanmar on a daily basis. Anti-regime forces continue to launch attacks on junta bases and military camps, with the regime responding to the attacks with aerial and naval support.
