Two local women were killed in a junta air assault on Thandwe in Arakan State on Sunday.
The civilian casualties were reported after the regime dropped 500-lb bombs on Thandwe twice on Sunday morning.
“A junta jet fighter dropped bombs on the Antaw Bridge, hitting a restaurant and killing two women. The two victims are the wife of the restaurant owner and a mentally-ill woman,” said a source.
The victims have been identified as Daw Su Su Hlaing, 34, and Ma Waing Sein Ma. Due to the junta aerial bombardment, the TMP factory was also damaged and there was reportedly a slight release of ammonia gas.
The Arakkha Army (AA) seized control of Thandwe on September 5, but civilian casualties continue to rise due to ongoing junta airstrikes and artillery attacks.
“The regime’s bombardment of towns and villages has become routine,” said a social activist in Arakan State. “The international community needs to take early action against the regime to prevent the regime’s airstrikes. If the international community does not take action against the regime, the airstrikes against the people will continue.”
At least 130 civilian casualties have been reported in Thandwe Township due to junta airstrikes since the latest fighting began in November of last year, according to a DMG tally.
Civilian casualties due to the regime’s airstrikes and artillery attacks on AA-controlled areas, conflict areas and non-combat areas in Arakan State are also increasing day by day.
