At least nine civilians were killed and 18 others injured on Tuesday in a junta airstrike on Arakan State's Ann Township, where fighting between the Myanmar military and Arakkha Army (AA) is ongoing, according to local sources.
The civilian casualties were reported after bombs dropped by a junta jet fighter landed and exploded in some residential parts of Ann on October 29.
"Eight civilians were killed and 14 others were injured in the junta airstrike on urban Ann. The junta jet fighter [also] dropped five bombs on Gyingon Village, killing an elderly woman and wounding four others. That's all I can say due to communication difficulties," said a source.
DMG continues to investigate the details surrounding the civilian casualties caused by the junta air assault.
The regime's ongoing bombardment of Ann has resulted in numerous civilian casualties, prompting widespread fear among residents.
Many residents are trapped, unable to escape the violence, and are facing security and food challenges due to regime restrictions on the movement of both people and goods.
"Locals can no longer go from one neighbourhood to another. As for food, I can't find it in my neighbourhood; even if I go to look for it in other areas, I can't go there anymore, so I'm in a situation of complete shortage," said a resident of Ann.
The remaining residents of Ann are allegedly being used as human shields by the regime, and many report both mental and physical exhaustion due to the unrelenting campaign of airstrikes and artillery attacks.
Fighting is intensifying daily as the AA ramps up its offensive to capture the Western Command, the regime's largest military base of operations in the west of Myanmar.
