Three local people in Ceditaung Village, part of Arakan State’s Buthidaung Township, were reportedly injured in a junta artillery strike on Wednesday morning.
Two out of seven mortar shells fired by regime forces stationed on hills near the village landed and exploded in Ceditaung Village at about 10 a.m. on December 27.
Daw Nwe Ma, in her 40s, received shrapnel wounds to her left arm and Ma A Y Kyu, in her 30s, sustained minor injuries to one of her arms. A Muslim man named Sallahyar suffered shrapnel wounds to his left thigh.
“Two mortar shells fell in the village, injuring three local people, and their conditions are considered not life-threatening. Some homes were also damaged by the military’s artillery strikes,” said a resident of Ceditaung Village.
Local people are worried about their safety due to the junta shelling, which reportedly occurred without there being fighting between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army in the area.
“We are worried that mortar shells fired by the military will land in the village,” said a local woman.
Fighting between the military and AA is ongoing in Buthidaung Township, where there have been multiple cases of the military firing heavy weapons in places where junta-AA hostilities were not occurring.
Civilian casualties continue to rise in Arakan State, inflicted by regime air and artillery strikes since renewed fighting broke out on November 13.
