Dozens of homes in Dainggyi Village, part of Arakan State’s Ann Township, were reduced to ashes in a regime airstrike and artillery attack at around 3 p.m. on November 5.
The regime carried out its bombardment of Dainggyi after junta soldiers stationed at the village monastery, school and homes withdrew due to an offensive by the Arakkha Army (AA).
“Almost the entire village was burned to the ground in the junta air assault and shelling,” said a military source.
Dainggyi Village has around 130 households and is located about one mile from the military’s Western Command. Most villagers have fled to safer locations over recent days.
The exact number of houses destroyed by the fire in Dainggyi Village remained unclear as of press time.
Fighting between the military and AA is escalating in Ann Township. In addition to regime airstrikes and artillery attacks, damage to homes is increasing due to arson by junta soldiers.
Junta troops on October 31 set fire to Pyaungchaung and Chingon villages in Ann Township, home to the Western Command.
Scores of junta troops on October 21 torched several homes in Ann Township’s Lone Village, located some seven miles from the Western Command headquarters.
“The regime started to attack civilians in areas held by the AA as it faced defeat in the battle with the ethnic armed group. It is no longer a strange act for the regime to commit a war crime targeting the people like that,” said a former lawmaker in Arakan State.
The regime’s attacks on towns and villages where civilians live, which are not related to the military, have resulted in the burning of houses and civilian casualties.
The regime is burning and raiding villages supporting the revolutionary forces, as well as destroying civilian homes by firing heavy weapons and carrying out airstrikes, according to Data for Myanmar.
At least 101,463 houses were destroyed across Myanmar in junta arson attacks since the 2021 military coup, Data for Myanmar said in a September report.
