The regime has launched airstrikes to support ground troops after junta reinforcement columns advancing toward the Nat Yay Kan hilltop base were halted by attacks from revolutionary forces, according to military sources.
The regime is attempting to reinforce the base with two separate columns, but intense fighting has broken out as revolutionary forces intercept and block their advance.
“As the two junta columns could not move beyond the areas near Pazi and Gotegyi villages, the regime has been trying to push forward with aerial support, leading to daily clashes. Attacks are targeting the reinforcement columns as well as the Nat Yay Kan hilltop base,” a revolutionary source said.
Ground sources said the regime is using jet fighters as well as Y-12 transport planes and L410 aircraft in the attacks.
The regime is employing both ground and air operations to prevent the fall of the Nat Yay Kan hilltop base, which is the last remaining stronghold on the Arakan mountain range in Ngaphe Township. Revolutionary forces continue efforts to intercept reinforcement routes.
On March 18, four vehicles carrying supplies for junta troops heading to the base were intercepted by revolutionary forces, resulting in casualties, including a military officer.
“If the Nat Yay Kan hilltop base falls, the regime will face serious military challenges, which is why it is defending the base through multiple means. It is sending continuous reinforcements as it cannot afford to lose strength. At the same time, efforts to capture the base are being prolonged as revolutionary forces must counter these reinforcement columns,” a military observer in Arakan State said.
The Arakan Army has been besieging the Nat Yay Kan hilltop base for more than a year and has already seized surrounding outposts, leaving only the main base.
Observers said the battle for the base could be prolonged, as the regime is expected to defend it with significant force.
