Junta troops and the Arakan Army (AA) clashed near Light Infantry Battalion No. 289 outside Paletwa town, Chin State, at around 10 a.m. on Monday.
The fighting involving artillery strikes lasted for more than one hour, according to a Paletwa resident.
“They fought until 11:30 a.m. The guns have fallen silent. The fighting took place near the town, so residents stay in their homes and dare not go out,” said the resident.
Junta troops and the AA have been fighting in Paletwa Township since November 14. The AA has seized control of 19 junta outposts in the township, including two tactical command bases at Taron Eain and Nonebu.
Increased junta movements have been reported in Paletwa town after the AA seized control of the regime’s Khawe tactical command base near Paletwa on December 27.
Some Paletwa residents have fled the town due to rumours that the AA would attack Light Infantry Battalion No. 289 at the bank opposite of the town.
“We can still hear gunshots. There have been reports that the AA would seize Battalion 289. Half of the town residents have evacuated from their homes,” said another Paletwa resident.
There were also fierce clashes near Chin Letwa (Lower) Village in Paletwa Township on December 30-31. Currently, junta and AA troops are fighting fiercely in at least four locations in Paletwa Township, with the regime mounting a strong defence involving air and artillery support to prevent the fall of its outposts.
