Three civilians including a child were injured by a junta artillery strike in Kainggyi (Mro) Village in Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township on December 31.
The shell landed and exploded on a street in the village at around 8 a.m. on December 31. An 11-year-old girl, a 17-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man were slightly injured by shrapnel.
“That day, Mawrawaddy tactical command base [of the Myanmar military] carried out a continuous bombardment,” said a resident of Kainggyi Village.
A press release by the Brotherhood Alliance on Monday said the Maungdaw-based Mawrawaddy tactical command base carried out deliberate artillery strikes against civilian populations, and three people were injured in Kainggyi (Mro) Village.
Kainggyi Village has a population of around 500 people across some 90 households. Many have fled due to fighting between junta troops and the Arakan Army (AA) near their village.
The AA attacked a border guard police outpost near Kainggyi Village at around 7 p.m. on Monday, with the fighting lasting nearly an hour.
“There are not many people left in the village. Many have fled. We have difficulties,” said another Kainggyi villager who has fled.
Since November 13, civilian casualties inflicted by junta air and artillery strikes continue to rise in Arakan State.
