The number of civilians killed or injured in junta airstrikes and artillery attacks in northern Shan State and Mandalay Region amid renewed fighting between the Myanmar military and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has reached 62, the ethnic armed group said in a statement.
Regime airstrikes and artillery fire killed 25 civilians, wounded 37 others and destroyed about 50 homes in northern Shan State’s Kyaukme, Nawnghkio and Hsipaw townships, and in Mogok Township, Mandalay Region, from June 25 to July 1, the statement said.
A junta artillery attack on Kyaukme killed three civilians on July 1. A regime shelling on Sanpheit Ward in Hsipaw injured five locals the same day, the TNLA statement added.
Two days earlier, two local women were killed and one man was injured in a junta artillery attack on Kyaukme’s Ward-8.
The TNLA said renewed fighting broke out in northern Shan State on June 25, marking a restart of the anti-regime “Operation 1027” after the China-brokered Haigen Agreement signed between the regime and the Three Brotherhood Alliance was violated by the regime.
The number of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Kyaukme, Nawnghkio and Mogok townships amid the renewed fighting has reached nearly 3,000, the TNLA said on June 29.
