Three people including a middle school student were injured after an artillery shell landed and exploded in Ingyin Village, part of Arakan State’s Myebon Township, on Wednesday evening.
The injured have been identified as Maung Phyo Naing Htwe, a 12-year-old middle school student, Ma Khin Khin Myint, 23, and U Pa Htoke, 31. They sustained shrapnel wounds to their legs, abdomens and faces.
“U Pa Htoke is in critical condition and the condition of the two others is considered not life-threatening. They were hit by shrapnel while sitting inside a home,” a resident of Ingyin Village told DMG.
Ingyin Village is located about four miles from the military’s Ann-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 544, which often fires mortar shells into the village, locals said.
“I don’t know which battalion fired the artillery shell. The military’s LIB 544 is located near our village. This regiment often fires artillery shells into the residential areas,” said another resident of Ingyin Village.
The injured people were reportedly sent to Kanhtaunggyi town by boat to receive medical treatment.
Fighting between the military and Arakan Army (AA) has been ongoing in Maungdaw, Rathedaung and Minbya townships in Arakan State, and Chin State’s Paletwa Township, since November 13.
At least nine civilians were killed and 40 people were injured in junta artillery strikes across Maungdaw, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Minbya, and Ann townships during the first three days of renewed hostilities in Arakan State, according to a DMG tally.
