The Arakan State military council said that the price of fuel will be thoroughly re-assessed to ensure that the people in Arakan State, which is affected by the recent cyclone, are not taken advantage of.

Cyclone Mocha destroyed 11 solar-powered fish drying facilities in Sittwe, Pauktaw, Ponnagyun townships, creating problems for locals in the area.

Historians estimate that four ancient stone stupas unearthed from a location about four furlongs from Guwa Pagoda in Ponnagyun Township, Arakan State, may be from the Waithali Period.

Arakan Civil Society Organizations (ACSO), a network of CSOs in Arakan State, on Monday called on the Myanmar military regime to allow international organizations and CSOs to unconditionally help storm victims.

According to the agreements, the two neighbors will trade in six categories of products including; agricultural produce, foodstuffs, soft drinks and beverages, pharmaceuticals, electronics and electric vehicles.

The IDPs at a displacement camp in the Myo Oo Monastery in Rathedaung, Arakan State, said they are facing accommodation difficulties since their shelters were covered with sports stand roofing from a township sports facility which were blown off by the storm.

The family of the victim has been in Thayetoak IDP camp in Sittwe for more than two years due to fighting between the military and the Arakan Army.

The volatile exchange rate is creating problems for air ticket agents who have been forced to frequently change ticket prices to avoid losses.

Many micro, small and medium enterprises in Arakan and Chin states and Magwe Region were seriously affected by Cyclone Mocha, and are struggling to recover.

“I don’t think the move will help control rice prices. The cost of growing rice has increased, and commodity prices have soared. And people have a lot of cash in their hands.  These are the market factors that led to rice price increase,” said rice merchant U Nay La.

“We cannot buy vegetables easily because many acres of vegetable farms in Arakan State were destroyed by the storm. Vegetables became scarce and unaffordable,” said Daw Aye Hsan, a vegetable vendor in Sittwe.

Despite warnings from the Arakan Army (AA) and Myanmar military regime, shops are charging higher than normal prices for building materials and other consumer goods in the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha, said residents.

About 60 percent of homes in Myaukkyein Village-tract in Myebon Township were destroyed by the storm. The storm victims set up makeshift tents to live since they are currently unable to repair their homes, said U Kyaw Than, the village-tract administrator.

The price of charcoal has also increased from K6,000 per sack to around K10,000 per sack now in Arakan State.

Muslim refugees will not return, said Ko Aung Myaing from Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh. “They are doing as they please without trying to fulfill our requirements. They are just doing it to pacify the international community,” he said.

Electricity has been restored in some neighborhoods in Sittwe, Arakan State 11 days after power outages due to Cyclone Mocha, according to local people.

Many acres of perennial crops such as mango, betel nut, pomelo, jackfruit and banana trees in Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U Townships were destroyed by the devastating storm.

“They [the regime] told us to hand over the relief supplies to us. We are not allowed to deliver directly. It is not ok for us. Other NGOs and INGOs also have plans for relief operations. But, we are not allowed,”
